By the Numbers: UFC 293

Sean Strickland shocked the world.

Given little chance of being competitive with Israel Adesanya, much less winning, Strickland outdueled “The Last Stylebender” for the better part of 25 minutes to claim the middleweight throne in the UFC 293 headliner at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Saturday night. Strickland’s victory changes the complexion of the middleweight division significantly, with several contenders receiving a new lease on life. Strickland should have no shortage of willing challengers in the coming months, but for now, let’s appreciate the chaos that MMA consistently delivers.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 293, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

13: Middleweight champions in UFC history. With his victory, Strickland joins Dave Menne, Murilo Bustamante, Evan Tanner, Rich Franklin, Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Michael Bisping, Georges St. Pierre, Robert Whittaker, Adesanya and Alex Pereira as the men who have held the 185-pound strap.

137: Significant strikes landed by Strickland. By comparison, Adesanya landed 94. Strickland outlanded his opponent 27 to 12 in Round 1, 38 to 20 in Round 4 and 36 to 21 in Round 5. Adesanya, meanwhile, outlanded Strickland 20 to 16 in Round 2 and 21 to 20 in Round 3.

.142: Significant head striking accuracy for Adesanya, who landed just 22 of 154 attempts in that area. Strickland landed 85 of 186 significant head strikes, a 46% success rate. Overall, Strickland landed 52% of his significant strikes, while Adesanya connected on 34%.

34: Significant leg strikes for Adesanya. Strickland, meanwhile, landed seven. That was the only area in which Adesanya held a striking advantage. In addition to his clear-cut edge in head strikes, Strickland outlanded his adversary 45 to 38 to the body, 11 to 0 in the clinch and 5 to 0 on the ground.

1: Person to land a knockdown on Adesanya during his 16-bout UFC tenure. By dropping “The Last Stylebender” in the opening stanza, Strickland became the first man to accomplish the feat.

3: Fighters in UFC history to win a fight via Ezekiel choke. With his second-round submission of Tai Tuivasa in the UFC 293 main event, Alexander Volkov joins Alexey Oleynik (twice) and Remco Pardoel — also heavyweights — in this select group.

2,759: Days since Volkov’s last submission triumph, when he used a triangle choke to defeat Denis Smoldarev in the third round of their bout at M-1 Challenge 64 on Feb. 19, 2016.

65: Significant strikes by which Volkov outlanded Tuivasa. The Russian outlanded his foe 51 to 15 in Round 1 and 42 to 13 in Round 2.

169: Combined significant striking deficit for Tuivasa in his last three UFC bouts, losses to Volkov (-65), Tom Aspinall (-21) and Ciryl Gane (-81).

4: Consecutive victories for Manel Kape, tying him with four others for the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s flyweight division.

5: Career knockdowns for Kape in six promotional appearances. That ties him with Ryan Benoit and Bruno Silva for seventh most in the history of the flyweight division.

.610: Significant striking accuracy for Kape, who landed 112 of 182 attempts. Dos Santos, meanwhile, was more active but less accurate: He landed 99 of 304 strikes — a 32% success rate.

9.31: Knockdowns per 15 minutes for Justin Tafa in his last four UFC appearances. Tafa made short work of Austen Lane in their heavyweight clash, dropping his foe and sealing his victory with follow-up ground-and-pound 1:22 into the opening stanza.

6: UFC finishes for Tyson Pedro, who defeated Anton Turkalj via first-round knockout in their featured light heavyweight tilt. In addition to Turkalj, the Aussie has put away Harry Hunsucker, Isaac Villanueva, Saparbek Safarov, Paul Crag and Khalil Rountree in the Octagon.

5: Consecutive victories for Carlos Ulberg, the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Ulberg defeated Da Woon Jung via third-round submission in their preliminary matchup.

4: Consecutive bouts in which Ulberg has landed a knockdown. Jung was the only opponent during that stretch who didn’t fall to “Black Jag” via knockout or technical knockout. Ulberg’s four straight finishes ties him with Benoit St. Denis for the fourth-longest active streak in the promotion.

12: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the lightweight clash between Jamie Mullarkey and John Makdessi to Makdessi. Cageside judges Mark Christie, Eric Colon and David Lethaby saw things differently, as all three submitted 29-28 tallies in favor of Mullarkey.

88: Significant strikes landed by Mullarkey. Makdessi, meanwhile, landed 83. Makdessi outlanded his foe 24 to 22 in Round 1 and 38 to 29 in Round 3, while Mullarkey held a 37-to-21 advantange in the second stanza.

319: Combined significant strikes landed by Nasrat Haqparast (171) and Landon Quinones (148) in their lightweight encounter. That total ranks as the fifth-highest combined total in the history of the division and third most in a three-round fight. Haqparast won a unanimous decision with a trio of 30-27 scorecards from the cageside judges. Haqparast’s 171 significant strikes rank as the third most ever in a three-round lightweight bout.

32: Significant leg strikes landed by Quinones. By comparison, Haqparast failed to land a significant leg strike in the bout. Quinones’ focus on the legs waned as the fight progressed, as he landed 17 leg strikes in Round 1, 10 in Round 2 and five in Round 3.

9:41: Total control time for Charles Radtke in a unanimous decision triumph over Mike Mathetha — better known as “Blood Diamond” — in a welterweight bout. Mathetha, meanwhile, logged just 21 seconds of control in defeat. However, Radtke was successful on just one of six takedown attempts and was outlanded 25 to 8 in significant clinch strikes.

23:32: Total control time — out of 34:38 overall — surrendered by “Blood Diamond” in three UFC appearances, all of which resulted in defeat for the City Kickboxing export.

0:59: Time of Gabriel Miranda’s first-round submission of Shane Young, making it the ninth fastest in the history of the UFC’s featherweight division. The 33-year-old Brazilian has finished 16 of his 17 career wins by way of submission.

1: Submission defeat in 21 professional fights for Young, who had previously lost six fights via decision and one by knockout.

3-3: Record for City Kickboxing-trained fighters at UFC 293. Tyson Pedro, Carlos Ulberg and Kevin Jousset earned victories for the camp, while Israel Adesanya, Jack Jenkins and Mike Mathetha suffered defeats.
