Dana White Terms Recent Nurmagomedov-McGregor Twitter Exchanges 'Unacceptable'
Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana
White has weighed in on the current Twitter war of words between
reigning lightweight champion Khabib
Nurmagomedov and former two-division champ Conor
McGregor.
The pair met last October at UFC 229 in a fight that was overshadowed by the ugly post-fight scuffle which broke out after Nurmagomedov dominated the Irishman for most of the fight before submitting him in the fourth round. This week, both fighters have exchanged some extremely personal jabs via Twitter, starting with McGregor posting a photo from Nurmagomedov’s wedding and referring to his veiled wife as a “towel,” which was deleted shortly after.
A clearly incensed Nurmagomedov then responded with a picture of
McGregor standing in a provocative pose alongside a woman and
calling him a “rapist,” likely in reference to McGregor’s ongoing
sexual assault investigation in Ireland.
"Rapist, you are Rapist," wrote Nurmagomedov. "You are a hypocrite who is not responsible for your actions. Justice will find you. We will see."
The Twitter exchanges have crossed the line according to White, who generally lets these types of exchanges over social media play out.
“I am aware of the recent social media exchange between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor,” White wrote in a statement to Yahoo! Sports. “The ongoing situation has escalated to a level that is unacceptable.
“As such, we are taking the necessary steps to reach out to both athlete camps and this situation is being addressed by all parties internally.”
The personal attacks by both fighters could be considered a breach of the promotion’s code of conduct policy. However, as both fighters are currently still serving suspensions for their involvements in the post-UFC 229 scuffle, the promotion may instead issue both parties with a formal warning first.
