Bettors expect that Harris (13-7, 1 NC) will come out with the win, as he currently sits as the moderate favorite over the far more experienced Overeem (45-18, 1 NC). The heavy-handed slugger from Alabama has closed as a betting favorite in each of his last five outings, and has not been considered an underdog since his short-notice match against former champ Fabricio Werdum. All 13 of Harris’ victories have come by knockout within two rounds, and he has never won a fight that reached the third frame. Although he briefly held a decision win over Andrei Arlovski, the result was overturned when Harris tested positive for a SARM that was later deemed a tainted supplement.
Overeem, on the other hand, posts an 89 percent finish rate with 40 stoppages throughout his 45 career triumphs. The former Strikeforce and Dream champ has closed as the underdog in four of his last five bouts, while only favored against Alexey Oleynik -- he knocked out Oleynik in the first round.
In the co-main event, Claudia Gadelha (-200) will look to halt the momentum of Angela Hill (+175) at strawweight. Dropping down to the featherweight division for the first time in his career, Edson Barboza (-130) is a minor favorite over the hard-charging Dan Ige (+110). At middleweight, Krzysztof Jotko (-160) posts as a favorite over the fellow streaking Eryk Anders (+140). The five-fight main card will be opened by a featherweight match between two bantamweights, as Yadong Song (-175) will be taking on the ever-exciting Marlon Vera (+150).
The prelims, which will also take place on ESPN, are headlined by a welterweight match between undefeated heavy favorite Miguel Baeza (-210) and “The Immortal” Matt Brown (+180). Anthony Hernandez (-120) will take on Kevin Holland (+100) at middleweight, while Mike Davis (-210) comes to blows with Giga Chikadze (+180) at bantamweight. Darren Elkins (-125) returns to face relative newcomer Nate Landwehr (+105) in the featherweight division, Cortney Casey (-160) faces off against Mara Romero Borella (+140) at 125 pounds, and the night opens with a heavyweight contest pitting Don'Tale Mayes (-120) against Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira (+100).
UFC Fight Night 172 takes place on May 16 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The event will be topped by a heavyweight tilt between Overeem and Harris, while the co-headliner sees Gadelha take on Hill at strawweight.
