Jan Blachowicz Unfazed by Rockhold Trash Talk, Credits ‘Legendary Polish Power’ for KO Win

After being stopped in the third round by Thiago Santos in February, Jan Blachowicz got back on track Saturday in one of the featured bouts of UFC 239 in Las Vegas.

Blachowicz (24-8) had won four in a row before losing to Santos via punches in the third earlier this year at UFC Fight Night 145. But Blachowicz looked terrific on Saturday, vanquishing former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold with a devastating counter left hook to the jaw and a multitude of follow-up punches 1:39 into Round 2. The violent onslaught knocked Rockhold senseless and left him with a broken jaw and uncertain future.

There was some bad blood brewing between the two, largely because Rockhold was verbally jabbing at Blachowicz in the build-up to the fight. The Berkut WCA Fight Team star made sure not to fall into any traps with the head games and opted to make his lethal fists do the talking instead.

“Trash talk doesn’t work on me,” he said after his victory. “I have the legendary Polish power and I’m proud of it. I saw that left hook in my dreams. I saw It when I visualized the fight. I don’t know how many times I watched his fight with Michael Bisping, but I knew I would finish him similarly.”

Though he likely won’t sniff a chance at reigning light heavyweight king Jon Jones’ throne this year, Blachowicz is confident that he has what it takes to eventually fight for the title. Santos took Jones to the limit in Saturday’s main event and Blachowicz has won five of his last six, a solid recent resume for a top contender. Also, with Jones seemingly running low on quality challengers to his kingdom, it’s likely that Blachowicz will find himself in his dream situation if he gets another win in the meantime.

“I hope to fight for the title,” he said. “I heard a rumor that if he [Rockhold] beat me, he was going to get the title shot. I beat him, so maybe I get it.”
