KSW 49: Soldic Retains Welterweight Title, Askham Becomes New Middleweight Champion

By Cole Shelton May 18, 2019

Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki was back for KSW 49 today and two title fights were on the line. It was headlined by welterweight champion Roberto Soldic taking on Krystian Kaszubowski.

The main event saw the two 24-year-old's hand fighting early on and trying to figure each others distance. When the 7-0 challenger lunged forward to throw a strike, Soldic caught him with a punch that put Kaszubowski out cold. Just like that, the fight was over with a first-round knockout win for Soldic.

In the co-main event, Scott Askham was fighting Michal Materla in a rematch for the vacant middleweight title. Although Askham won the first fight, it was Materla who had success early on. He took Askham down repeatedly and used ground and pound to deal damage. However, Askham did a good job of putting Materla in rubber guard where he used elbows off his back to get up. Ultimately, after Materla stated to fade, Askham picked it up in the third round and knocked out the titleholder.

In other action, Damian Grabowski beat Karol Bedorf by TKO in the second round. Norman Parker got yet another win in the promotion beating Artur Sowinski by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' scorecards. While Erko Jun TKO'd Akop Szostak in the first round. Veteran, Martin Zawada did enough to outlast Thiago Silva winning by decision, (29-27, 29-27, 29-28). Antun Racic also needed the judges' scorecards as he edged out a split-decision over Pawel Politylo (29-28, 29-28, 28-29). Luis Henrique Barbosa de Oliveira improved to 12-5 with a submission win over Michal Andryszak. In the first fight of the night, Lezek Krakowski beat Michael Dubois by majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28).
