Report: Paige VanZant Out, Randa Markos In Against Amanda Ribas at UFC Brasilia

A popular Ultimate Fighting Championship strawweight has suffered another setback in returning to action.

On Thursday, Combate reported Paige VanZant (8-4) will no longer be competing at UFC Brasilia at strawweight against Amanda Ribas (8-1) due to an undisclosed injury. VanZant reportedly requested they reschedule the match on a future card a month later, but Ribas opted to remain on the Brazilian event. In VanZant's stead will be Randa Markos (10-7-1), who will be stepping in on around seven weeks' notice.

VanZant has seen her fair share of injuries the last few years, breaking her arm repeatedly during training. Her bout against Ribas was slated to be the final one of her current contract, and her first return to 115 pounds since a strawweight defeat to Michelle Waterson in 2016. "12 Gauge" snapped a two-fight skid by tapping Rachael Ostovich with an armbar at UFC Fight Night 143 in January 2019, and has been out of action since.

Markos has seen an incredibly tumultuous UFC tenure, never winning or losing two bouts in a row. The Canadian alternated wins and losses for her first nine UFC bouts before fighting to a draw against Marina Rodriguez. Since then, "Quiet Storm" has surrounded a decision loss to Claudia Gadelha with victories against Ashley Yoder and Angela Hill last year.

Ribas has seen great success in both of her trips to the Octagon in 2019. The Brazilian made her debut at UFC on ESPN 3 against Emily Whitmire, and she tapped "Spitfire" in the second frame. In her sophomore effort, she bulldozed Mackenzie Dern to hand fellow Brazilian grappling whiz her first career defeat by one-sided decision.

UFC Brasilia takes place on March 14 at the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. Headlining the card is a lightweight tilt between Kevin Lee and Charles Oliveira, while welterweight grapplers also compete against one another in Demian Maia vs. Gilbert Burns.
