Sam Alvey Reveals Broken Hand Forced Him Out of Proposed Bout vs. ‘Shogun’ Rua

Sam Alvey has confirmed his withdrawal from UFC Fight Night 164 in Sao Paulo, revealing that a broken hand forced him to exit from a proposed light heavyweight showdown with Mauricio Rua.

The news of Alvey’s exit was initially reported last week. The 33-year-old Team Quest representative announced the nature of his injury on Instagram.

“I am so sorry [Mauricio Rua] and [UFC],” Alvey wrote. “I broke my hand and I need to pull out of my fight on Nov. 16. An accident in practice has taken me out. My plan and his plan don’t always align but his plan is always better.”

UFC Fight Night 164 takes place at Ibirapuera Gymnasium on Nov. 16 and is headlined by a light heavyweight scrap pitting Jan Blachowicz against Ronaldo Souza. It is unclear if Rua will remain on the card, although the Brazilian veteran is reportedly hoping to find a replacement opponent.

Alvey is currently on a three-bout skid, including a decision loss against Klidson Abreu in his most recent outing at UFC on ESPN 4.
