The first fight of the evening is a bantamweight bout between Brandon Davis and UFC newcomer Randy Costa. The referee for the UFC 236 curtain jerker is Jason Herzog. They touch gloves and the fight begins. Davis with a leg kick and Costa connects with a counter straight right that drops Davis. He’s immediately back up to his feet and Costa nearly connects on a right hook. Davis moves forward and nails Costa with a knee to the body. He’s now pushing Costa against the cage. Costa is doing a good job of defending the takedown and manages to break free. Costa with a hard low kick and he connects on a right hook and then a left high kick. Wild start to this fight. Costa connects on a left hook but Davis pushes forward and pushes Costa against the fence again. Costa defends again and they break. Costa with a right hook to the body. Davis connects with a straight right of his own. Davis moves forward and Costa connects with another right hook but again Davis eats it. Costa with another counter left hook but once again Davis eats it. Davis lands a low kick, and another. Costa with a jab and then a right hook. He pushes forward and lands another left high kick on Davis, who just eats it. Costa with a hard jab but he is beginning to show signs of fatigue. Davis pushes Costa against the cage and they are jockeying for position. Davis lands a hard elbow on the break. The 10 second-clapper rings and the round is soon over.

Round 2

Round two begins. Costa lands an overhand right and badly hurts Davis, buckling his knees. Davis manages to grab a hold of Costa and clear the cobwebs. They break. Costa continues to land the jab but Davis walks through them and gets inside, landing a brutal knee to the face of Costa that appears to stun him. In desperation Costa changes levels and goes for a double leg takedown but Davis scrambles and is able to take the back of Costa and get the rear-naked choke. He doesn’t have his hooks in but he’s able to get the choke anyways. Great fight to start the night!

Round 1

The second fight of the night is a women’s flyweight bout between Lauren Mueller and Poliana Botelho. The referee is George Allen. No touch of gloves to begin this one. Botelho lands a low kick. Mueller pushes forward and lands a straight right. Botelho with a teep to the body, and then a low kick. Mueller continues to push forward with her jab. She lands a straight right as Botelho’s chin is sticking up in the air. Botelho lands a hard kick to the body that hurts Mueller. Botelho pushes forward and clinches her along the fence. Botelho is landing hard knees to the body of Mueller. She decides to use the body lock to land a takedown and lands on top in the half guard of Mueller. Botelho nearly takes the back of Mueller in a scramble but Mueller instead uses it as an opportunity to regain full guard. Botelho moves into half guard and is landing some hard elbows to the body of Mueller, who is able to scramble and finally get back to her feet in the transition. Now Mueller is pushing Botelho against the fence, but Botelho reverses it. Botelho continues pushing on Mueller until the end of the round.

Round 2

The second round begins. Mueller immediately moves forward and lands a straight right but Botelho returns with a counter straight right of her own. Botelho lands a high kick that is partially blocked by Mueller. Now Mueller moves forward and lands a left hook. She grabs hold of Botelho and is pushing her against the cage. Botelho is landing some heavy knees in the clinch and is now the one pushing Mueller against the cage. Mueller reverses position and lands a hard elbow. They break. Botelho changes levels and lands a double leg takedown. She’s now in Mueller’s full guard. Mueller is able to make her way back to the fence and stand back up but Botelho continues to push her against the fence. Mueller reverses position and is landing knees to the thigh of Botelho, who reverses position once again. The referee decides to break up the stalemate. Botelho lands a spinning back kick to the body. Mueller with a kick to the body of her own. Low kick by Mueller. Botelho lands a hard jab and a left hook just before the end of the round.

Round 3

Third and final round and Mueller needs a finish as she’s down two rounds to none. Botelho lands another low kick right away. Mueller continues to push forward and work off the jab. She lands a kick to the body of Botelho and continues to move forward but Botelho grabs a hold of her and they clinch. There isn’t much action going on, just a lot of wall-and-stall, and the referee breaks it up. Mueller continues to push forward with her jab but Botelho lands a hard body kick. Botelho clinches up Mueller once again. They referee breaks it up after just a few seconds. Mueller lands a knee to the body and Botelho looks exhausted at this point. Mueller lands a straight right and then a big knee to the body. She is moving forward looking for the finish. She lands a low kick and drops Botelho. For whatever reason Mueller decides to jump into the full guard of Botelho despite all the success she was having on the feet. Botelho is just holding onto Mueller until the final bell. Bad fight IQ cost Mueller the chance of a late finish.

He’s being very technical right now but isn’t show as much aggression as in his previous fights. Soukhamthath moves forward but Jackson grabs a hold of him and clinches him against the cage. Soukhamthath is able to break free. Jackson has Soukhamthath against the fence and is landing some big, wild shots. Soukhamthath manages to hang in but Jackson is landing at will. He lands a massive right hand and Soukhamthath looks badly rocked but is somehow surviving the onslaught. Jackson grabs a hold of him and starts landing some knees in the clinch. He uses a body lock takedown to get the fight to the ground once again. Jackson stays strong in top control, landing some punches to the face of Soukhamthath, and the round soon ends.

Round 3

Round three starts and Soukhamthath needs a finish. Soukhamthath tries to land a high kick but falls down in agony due to a counter kick to the ground by Jackson. Clearly an accident but Soukhamthath is taking his time to fully recover. He says he’s fine and time is back in. Soukhamthath pushes forward and lands a double leg takedown on Jackson, who sweeps him and lands in full mount. Jackson is on top landing heavy punches to the face of Soukhamthath. Soukhamthath manages to regain half guard but Jackson is still landing hard punches from the top. Jackson is looking for a kimura and uses it to land some heavy punches to the stomach of Soukhamthath, who manages to scramble back into full guard. Jackson continues to land hard punches from the top. Soukhamthath tries for a desperation armbar but Jackson stacks him and slams him. Jackson is now in side control and continues to land ground and pound until the end of the round, and the fight.

Muhammad is working hard for a single leg takedown but Millender defends it well. They temporarily pause due to an eye poke on Muhammad. Time is back in and Millender lands another long jab. Up next is a welterweight bout between Max Griffin and Zelim Imadaev. The referee is George Allen. Griffin immediately tags Imadaev with a straight right. He clinches him up and takes him to the ground with a body lock takedown. Imadaev manages to scramble back up but grabs the fence to prevent another one. The referee calls time and takes a point away. Griffin clinches up and once again lands a body lock takedown. Griffin takes the back of Imadaev and is looking for a rear-naked choke. Griffin isn’t able to get his hooks in but is working on a neck crank. Imadaev is defending well but Griffin isn’t letting go of the neck crank. Imadaev grabs the fence to get out of it but the ref doesn’t see the fence grab this time. Imadaev gets back to his feet. He lands a spinning back elbow that rocks Griffin, and then a spinning wheel kick. Imadaev just misses landing another spinning back elbow. Griffin clinches up against the fence but Imadaev reverses him. He starts to land some hard knees to the thighs of Griffin, who is landing some hard knees of his own in the clinch. They break and Imadaev lands a hard low kick just before the end of the round.

Griffin is absolutely exhausted and Imadaev lands another knee to the fact. Imadaev lands an uppercut to the chin and then a hard let hook. Another knee by Imadaev and the round is over.

Pantoja lands another straight right but Reis partially blocks it. Pantoja lands a kick to the body. Reis clinches up Pantoja against the fence and lands a body lock takedown. Pantoja is able to get back up to his feet and escape the grip of Reis. Pantoja lands a massive straight right down the pipe and drops Reis. Pantoja follows him to the mat and lands a series of heavy punches, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. What a great win for Pantoja, the biggest of his career so far.

Round 1

The final preliminary bout is a lightweight tilt between Jalin Turner and Matt Frevola. The referee is Marc Goddard. They touch gloves and the fight begins. Turner lands a knee right away that hurts Frevola, but Frevola is able to grab a hold of him and drag Turner to the mat. Frevola is now working in side control and is looking to take the back of Turner. He has the back of Turner and is looking for a rear-naked choke. Turner is doing a good job of defending but Frevola has him in a bad spot with over three minutes to work. Turner is finally able to scramble and escape and get back to his feet. Turner takes the center of the Octagon. He lands a hard straight right that hurts Frevola. Low kick by Frevola and Turner lands a right hook. Frevola changes levels and lands a single leg takedown and moves into side control once again. Turner reverses and gets on top but Frevola locks him in a guillotine choke and it’s tight. Turner uses the cage to scramble and gets back to his feet. Frevola with a body kick and Turner with a counter straight right. Frevola changes levels but Turner is able to stuff the shot and the round ends shortly thereafter.

Round two begins. Turner with a straight left. Frevola changes levels and is looking for a double leg takedown but Turner stuffs it. Frevola with a hard kick to the body. Frevola changes levels and lands a double leg takedown but Turner quickly gets back up. Frevola lands a low kick. Frevola with a right hook. Turner responds with a left hook of his own. Another low kick by Frevola. He looks for another double leg but Turner stuffs it once again. Turner with a short right hook and Frevola responds with a left hook of his own. Frevola changes levels and lands a single leg takedown but Turner catches him in a guillotine choke and uses it to get on top. But Frevola is able to latch onto a single leg and get back on top of Turner. Frevola latches on a guillotine choke and pulls guard but Turner is able to get out of it. Frevola lands an illegal upkick from inside his guard and the referee pauses the fight. Marc Goddard says the foot just grazed Frevola but says it was an accident. It looks like a toe got into the eye of Turner, but no point is taken. Time is back in and the round is soon over.

Round three begins. Turner pushes forward and lands with a left uppercut. Turner with a kick to the body and a straight left behind it. Frevola with a low kick. Turner lands a left hook to the body. Turner continues to move forward but there simply isn’t enough time left in the fight for him to the get the finish he so desperately needs.

They touch gloves and the fight is on. Krylov comes out with a body kick. Krylov with a straight left and a front kick right to the face of St. Preux, who changes levels and completes a double leg takedown. Krylov is able to get back to his feet but St. Preux completes a single leg takedown. Krylov gets back up and is looking for a front choke. St. Preux is able to get out of the choke and then completes a trip takedown. Krylov once again gets back to his feet. St. Preux gets him to the ground with a whizzer takedown. St. Preux is now on top of Krylov in his full guard. He moves into half guard and then moves into full mount. St. Preux lands some hard punches from the top but Krylov manages to buck his hips and escape. Krylov lands some hard knees on St. Preux against the fence. Krylov with a heavy kick to the body on St. Preux, who looks very tired after all that wrestling. Krylov clinches St. Preux against the fence until the end of the first round.

Jouban lands a low kick. Jouban lands a low blow and the referee calls time. After a minute, the referee calls time back in. Grant lands another left hook and then another low kick. Jouban returns with a high kick attempt. Jouban lands an overhand right. Low kick by Grant. Jouban continues to move forward but he hasn’t landed anything significant all fight. Jouban lands a double leg takedown late and lands some hard ground and pound right before the buzzer. That late takedown could be the difference in this fight.

He uses it to get inside and clinch up Adesanya against the fence, who circles away. Adesanya with a counter straight right. Short uppercut by Adesanya and Gastelum returns fire with a straight left. Adesanya with a left hook. Low kick by Adesanya. Jab by Adesanya. Gastelum connects on another right hook. He lands a head kick and Adesanya is rocked badly. For some reason Gastelum changes levels for a takedown but Adesanya stuffs it and returns fire with a high kick. This has been a crazy round, easily the best round of the fight so far. A right hook by Adesanya and Gastelum appears to be rocked. Still, Gastelum moves forward. Adesanya stuffs a lazy double leg takedown attempt by Gastelum. Kick to the body by Adesanya. Straight right by Adesanya but Gastelum eats it. This is wild! Another straight right by Adesanya and he drops Gastelum to the mat. Gastelum is able to get back up and clinch Adesanya against the cage. Gastelum is looking for a double leg takedown near the fence but Adesanya is able to thwart it. Straight right by Adesanya and Gastelum is in trouble. Another straight right and a left hook and Gastelum falls down to the mat. Somehow Gastelum has survived this beatdown but the referee is really considering stopping it. The 10-second buzzer rings and Gastelum is able to hold on for dear life and make it to the final bell. What a fight.
