Jacob Kilburn (145) vs. Austin Lingo (145)

Round 1

It’s time! After a long layoff to recharge our collective batteries, the UFC is back in action in resounding fashion. This event will be the grand return to network television, for the first time for the promotion since 2018 when it left Fox. The show, with fans in the building, begins in the featherweight division, between two heavy hitters in search of their first Octagon win as Kilburn (8-3, 0-1 UFC) faces Lingo (7-1, 0-1 UFC). The first referee assignment of the year goes to Marc Goddard, and with a touch of gloves away we go! Lingo starts off early with a sharp one-two, and he avoids the counter. Kilburn sits down on a few punches, and he cracks Lingo, but Lingo replies with a right hand that drops Kilburn right out of the gate. As “The Killer” scrambles back to his feet, Lingo sneaks in a knee on the chin and a stiff left hand, and Kilburn bounces off the fence to get his bearings. Kilburn gets some space and pumps out a few jabs, but Lingo is on him with power punches. Lingo snaps his head back again, and Kilburn shoots in for a takedown but is easily stuffed. Lingo works a power jab, and follows one with a fierce right hand. Kilburn is in the danger zone again, and Lingo stings him with a powerful combination. Lingo sets up a few right hands from straight, piston-like jabs, until Kilburn shoots in for a single. “Lights Out” defends his position with a guillotine choke, and looks irritated that he cannot go in for the kill and instead has to fight with his back to the fence. Lingo hops away and gets his leg free, where the two starts trading again much to the delight of the fans in the building. Two big punches are followed by two more, and Lingo gets nailed with a counter but walks through it to slug it out. Lingo blasts a low kick that makes Kilburn adjust himself, and he reaches Kilburn with a long right hand that again makes Kilburn change levels. Lingo staves it off and mashes Kilburn into the fence, but “The Killer” is able to free himself and circle out. Lingo pursues his man and throws bombs, but Kilburn rolls with them. As Kilburn fires off a front kick, Lingo greets him with a check left hook to break it up. He catches Kilburn at the end of a right hand, but Kilburn is tough and absorbs a fierce right hand that comes right after. Kilburn shakes off the cobwebs and lets go with a low kick that slides up and clacks off the cup. Goddard allows Lingo to take some time to walk it off, who needs just over 30 seconds to recover. Kilburn greets him with a spinning back fist, and Lingo is hurt! Lingo tries to respond with his own spinning back fist, and Kilburn catches him on the way in with a takedown that pushes Lingo into the chain-link fence until the horn sounds.

Round 2

Lingo starts off where he left off early last round, with a few right hands that pierce the guard and knock Kilburn’s head back. Lingo steps in and clips Kilburn with a left hook, but “The Killer” is unconcerned. Lingo does not slow his pace, touching Kilburn repeatedly until Kilburn pursues a takedown. As he lifts Lingo into the air, Lingo is unable to stop this one, and is forced instead to defend with a guillotine choke as he falls to his back. Kilburn pops his head out, but he cannot capitalize on the position as Lingo springs to his feet. Kilburn stings him with a few punches, but Lingo blasts him back with a left that makes Kilburn take a quick count of his teeth. These two featherweights are swinging, and Lingo is connecting but Kilburn is eating them flush and not going down. Lingo steps back and scores a leg kick, and when he comes over the top, Kilburn changes levels to take the fight down. As Lingo defends it, he reverses the position to go after a trip takedown in the clinch, but it is nothing doing. When they separate, a serious right hand clatters off the head of Kilburn, once more making Kilburn shoot in low for a failed takedown attempt. Lingo steps away from a head kick to dance his way in and land a few punches, but Kilburn counters him with a left hand. Lingo lands with a few punches as he charges forward into the clinch, and Goddard warns him to not grab the fence. Kilburn turns him about on the fence, but Lingo does not allow him to maintain this position as they jockey for control. Lingo breaks free, and this time, he sees the spinning back fist coming and narrowly avoids it. When Lingo walks forward with a left hand, Kilburn grabs hold of him and puts him down to the ground, where he drops Lingo on his head. The Texan is able to power through the position and stand back up, where he shoots in for his own takedown. Kilburn defends it by snatching up a guillotine choke, but Lingo remains calm and pulls his head free, as he sits in half guard looking to set up some strikes. Instead, Kilburn stands up, and he lets loose a head kick that gets blocked and a spinning back fist that is evaded. One last unsuccessful takedown attempt for Kilburn concludes the second frame.

Round 3

The featherweights greet with a glove touch, and Lingo checks a quick leg kick. Kilburn throws a body kick, and Lingo wades forward to start to brawl. Kilburn welcomes it, and after they both exchange and land, Lingo rushes in to surprise his foe and takes the fight down, dropping Kilburn on his head. Kilburn attacks a kimura while he is on his side, and Lingo pauses to assess his position while Goddard implores them to do something. The two-on-one wrist control for Kilburn keeps Lingo at bay, so Lingo punches the inside of Kilburn’s thigh as he is trapped in this position. Kilburn rolls through with the maneuver, but Lingo keeps rolling with him and stands back up. Kilburn looks to take the fight down, but Lingo halts him and presses his man to the cage. Lingo squeezes Kilburn to the cage with all his might, but Kilburn separates and wants to stand and bang. Lingo obliges him and fires off a few one-twos, and he clips Kilburn with a left hook. “The Killer” drops down low for a single leg, but Lingo pulls his leg away and steps back to allow Kilburn to stand back up. Kilburn thanks him with a head kick that goes wide, and when he throws a leg kick, Lingo meets it with a fierce one-two that bloodies Kilburn’s nose. Kilburn comes up short with another low single, and Lingo stands him up with a stern right hand. Kilburn gets off a single leg kick, and when he tries to double up on it, Lingo comes back at him with heavy punches. The two trade shots, and Lingo rings Kilburn’s bell with a left hand. Kilburn gets hold of Lingo and tries to take him down one final time to end the fight, but Lingo keeps him away and ends the fight by raising his arms in the air.

Sarah Moras (136) vs. Vanessa Melo (136)

Round 1

We switch gears now to the women’s bantamweight division between two 135ers that are in dire need of a win, when “Cheesecake” Moras (6-6, 3-5 UFC) comes to blows with “Miss Simpatia” Melo (10-8, 0-3 UFC). This classic matchup of Brazil vs. Canada will be officiated by referee Keith Peterson, and thankfully, the nonsense level in this arena just dropped to zero. Moras keeps her distance with rangy jabs and kiais to confuse Melo, but Melo walks through them and lands a right hand. Every strike from the Canadian is punctuated by loud kiais, further emphasizing their impact as she keeps her distance while avoiding looping punches. Moras lands a heavy inside leg kick, and Melo comes back at her with a left hand. Moras scores another kick on the inside, and she ducks out of the way of oncoming strikes. Melo walks her down and slings an overhand right, and goes after another as Moras rolls with them but still absorbs them. Melo catches her on the way out with a left hook, and Moras recommits to her loud jab. As Moras sticks her jab out there, Melo comes over the top with a left hand and catches Moras. Moras lands a leg kick as she circles away, and Melo sits down on a left hand when another comes her way. Moras picks at her with kicks while Melo wings right hands, and the Brazilian’s strikes have far more import than that of her opponent’s. “Cheesecake” gets off a clean one-two, surprising Melo, but Melo gathers himself and continues to walk down her foe. Melo lands a right hand to the chest as Moras backpedals and peppers Melo with the jab and leg kick. The crowd grows restless, so Melo entertains them with a big right hand. The two women trade strikes to the bell.

Round 2

The two bantamweights touch gloves to start off the round, and both land single shots and back away. Moras keeps her distance and backs away from a superman punch, all while reaching out with jabs that cannot find the mark. Melo scores a solid left hand, and the punches that follow knock Moras’ mouthpiece out. Peterson pauses the action to replace the gumshield, and Melo continues where she left off marching her adversary down. When Moras commits to a body kick, Melo scores a fierce right hand that knocks Moras’ head back. Melo is starting to find her mark with these strikes, and she is also marking Moras’ face up. Moras continues to jab from afar, and Melo cracks her with a left hand to force some blood from the nose. Moras’ jabs, leg kicks and kiais do not keep Melo at bay, as the Brazilian is intent on throwing bombs. When Moras comes in to strike, Melo clips her with a right hand to cause the blood to flow a little greater. Moras’ jabs allow for Melo to time them with looping power shots, and she dips down and lands a right hand when Moras closes the distance. Moras strings together a few long jabs as she dances out of harm’s way, and Melo just misses a huge right hand. Moras disrupts another power punch with her jabs, and Melo is instantly back at her with far more powerful punches. “Miss Simpatia” stings her with a left hand, and Moras shoots in for a takedown but gets pushed over instead. Moras thinks about luring Melo down into her guard, but Melo wants nothing to do with the ground game. The two tentatively strike at one another until the round concludes.

Tyler Treese scores the round: 10-9 Melo

Round 3

There is a last touch of gloves to open the third round, and we start off with much of the same. Moras keeps sticking and moving with the jab, and Melo loads up on right hands as she stalks the Canadian down. Moras reaches out with a single jab to make Melo take a step back, and Melo swings and misses with a left hook counter. Moras lands with the occasional jab, but Melo finally finds a right hand to open up Moras’ nose again. Moras keeps to singular strikes so that Melo cannot time a counter combination, and she skirts away from afar as she sneaks in leg kicks and ducks looping punches. Melo shows frustration as she sprints forward to engage, but “Cheesecake” keeps away as she paws out jab after jab. Melo swings and misses with a big punch, and the two continue this tepid pace as seconds tick off the clock. Melo lands a pair of low leg kicks, and Moras scores a clean right hand over the top. Moras gets jabbed as she comes in with a strike, and she lands a leg kick that makes Melo change her stance. Moras reaches out with jabs while Melo slaps them away and tries to load up on shots. The crowd again voices its frustration, and when the 10-second clapper sounds, the two finally pick up on strikes. Moras wings left hooks while Melo fires back at her, and the two trade until the bell.

David Zawada (170) vs. Ramazan Emeev (171)

Round 1

Two powerful welterweights battle it out next, as “Sagat” Zawada (17-5, 1-2 UFC) looks to show off his “Tiger Uppercut” against Dagestan’s Emeev (19-4, 4-1 UFC). The third man inside the Octagon is referee Jason Herzog, and there is a glove touch before these two get down to business. Emeev leads with a leg kick and a huge overhand right, and his hand skims off the jaw as Zawada circles away. Zawada closes the distance, and Emeev cracks him with a right hand that makes Zawada turn around. Zawada regains his composure and lands a slapping leg kick, but Emeev comes back at him with a long jab. The two crash together and Zawada starts unloading on the inside, but Emeev stays patient and pops him on the way out with a right hand. Zawada scores another leg kick, and Emeev ducks down to charge forward with reaching punches. Zawada rushes in with a punch, and Emeev grabs him, lifts him in the air and slams him down. Zawada powers to his feet, and he lands a front kick up the middle to thank Emeev for this. Zawada scores a few strikes as he rushes in to clinch, and he rips a knee to keep Emeev pinned to the fence. Emeev turns him about and starts landing several short knees, before catching a Zawada knee and putting the German on his back. “Sagat” maintains full guard as he throws punches off his back to the side of the head, but Emeev completely ignores them as he steps over to half guard. Zawada defends with a kimura off his back, and Emeev slides Zawada into the fence, pulls his arm out, and starts slamming Zawada in the face with ferocious punches. Zawada gets upright and drills Emeev in the chest with a knee, forcing them to separate. Emeev leaps forward with a left jab, and Zawada sits down on two heavy low kicks to end the round.

Round 2

Zawada begins the round with a stiff low kick that makes Emeev slip off-balance. Emeev charges in with looping punches, and Zawada sees them coming and avoids them. Emeev changes levels to take the fight down, and Zawada keeps a butterfly guard to try to kick Emeev off but gives up on it to close his guard. Emeev looks to get some shots off from above, but Zawada kicks off and scores a quick upkick on the chin. The German uses the momentary surprise to pop back up, and Emeev rushes in to press him to the fence. Zawada manages to separate, and he stings Emeev with yet another leg kick. Zawada chases after him with a few punches, but they all fall short as Emeev regathers himself. Zawada targets another low kick, and Emeev replies with an overhand right. Emeev lets loose a kick to the body, and Emeev comes towards him but gets clinched. Zawada may have landed a groin shot, but there is no pause and instead he fires off a leg kick. Emeev looks to counter with a big right hand, and he leaps forward with a left. Zawada advances and gets grabbed again, but Zawada clips him with clinch strikes and makes Emeev back off. “Sagat” rips the leg with another kick, and jumps forward with a knee. Emeev greets him with a right-left combination, and Zawada walks through it to score a stern right hand and a nasty leg kick. Zawada sees his success and fires another, and when Emeev walks him down, Zawada scores one more. Emeev lands one single right hand, and Zawada marches through it, lands a few, and pushes off to scores a solid combination. Emeev ducks low and catches Zawada for a takedown, but the German miraculously stays upright and lands a high knee in the clinch as the horn sounds.

Round 3

At the tail end of the round, we can see on the replay that a right hand from Emeev slashes open Zawada’s left eye. When the round opens, Emeev instantly pursues a double leg takedown, and he hits it emphatically to put Zawada flat on his back. Zawada fights off his back with strikes from below, and he even lands an upkick when Emeev jumps back down upon him. Emeev lands some heavy punches from above, opening the cut up again and causing blood to flow into Zawada’s eye. Emeev advances to half guard as Zawada rolls to his knees, and the German stands back up as Emeev latches on to a guillotine choke. Zawada takes the fight down and Emeev tries to turn his guillotine into a palm-to-palm choke, but Zawada ignores it and steps into side control. “Sagat” rips elbows to the body and shoulder strikes as he holds Emeev tight on the ground, keeping the Dagestani fighter trapped. Zawada sits up to throw strikes, but in the process, he allows Emeev to get half guard back for a moment. Zawada jumps over into full mount, and Emeev has no choice but to grab hold of him to stop Zawada from posturing up. Emeev times an advancing Zawada by scrambling and reversing the position to put Zawada on his back, but Zawada simply muscles his way back up. Zawada digs in a leg kick that draws a reaction from his opponent, and both men score solid hooks. Zawada stings him with a right hand, and Emeev looks for a spinning elbow but there is nothing doing. Instead, Emeev pushes into a clinch and he cannot secure a takedown, so before Zawada can land on him on the inside, he breaks free. Emeev walks forward and gets tagged with a left hand, but he scores one of his own. One final right hand from Emeev lands, and this razor-close fight comes to an end.

Carlos Felipe (264) vs. Justin Tafa (265)

Round 1

Hold on to your hats, the heavyweights are up next. Two men with lead in their fists are about to throw down, as Felipe (9-1, 1-1 UFC) slings leather with Tafa (4-1, 1-1 UFC). Referee Herb Dean will need to tread lightly as these two men who combine for 519 pounds dance, although they do touch gloves to show a sign of respect before swinging for the bleachers. After a tentative 30 seconds, Tafa starts off with a head kick that is well off the mark. Felipe responds with a strike to the body, so Tafa kicks him in the leg. Felipe swings and misses, and Tafa counters him with an overhand right and a thudding body kick. Tafa targets the body again, and this time Felipe catches it and pelts him in the leg with his shin. “Boi” loads up on a right hand, and the Australian absorbs it and aims at the body with another kick. Felipe wings a right hand, but he again comes up short with it as Tafa chips at his lead leg. Tafa boots him in the midsection once more, and he lands a leg kick and an overhand right for good measure. Felipe replies with a body kick of his own, so Tafa kicks the leg and makes Felipe hop around. Tafa reaches with a left hand, but his more important strike is a kick to the torso. After Tafa lands a leg kick, Felipe reaches out and jabs him in the eye with a finger, allowing Dean to pause the action. They resume and touch gloves, and Tafa slams his shin into Felipe’s stomach. Tafa works the legs with more kicks, and Felipe comes at him with punches. Tafa allows it and slings back, sitting down on a huge left hand that makes Felipe backpedal. Felipe misses with a big right hand, and when he spins around, Tafa kicks him along the way. Tafa splits the upright with a straight left hand, and Felipe loads up on a big right hand that just bounces off the shoulder. Tafa kicks him in the body again, and this time, Felipe responds in kind. Both men trade heavy punches, and Tafa reaches out to measure and lands a big left hand to end the round.

Round 2

There is a glove touch between these two big men, and Tafa begins with a one-two. Tafa rips the body with a kick, and Felipe tries to make him pay by rushing in and throwing bombs. Tafa turns and rolls with the punches, absorbing a few but avoiding the brunt of the damage. Tafa lands a leg kick, and as he eats a right hand, he gives his opponent one back. Tafa splits the guard with a left hand, and he lands one more and a leg kick as Felipe tries to counter with a right hand. Felipe ducks down as if to consider a takedown, but Tafa pushes him away and kicks him in the breadbasket. Felipe pats his belly to goad his foe on, so Tafa punches him in the face. Tafa again rips the body, and he blocks the big right hand counter that comes his way. Tafa lands a left hand, and he has another blocked that still pushes “Boi” backwards. Tafa doubles up on his jab and lands a leg kick that makes Felipe shake his head, but he is just standing still. Tafa catches him on the way in with a left hand, and Felipe slings back at him and motions with his hands to keep throwing. Tafa obliges with a pair of pounding body kicks, and Felipe is no longer smiling as he absorbs an uppercut on the chin. As Felipe comes in, he again pokes Tafa in the eye, and Dean gives the Brazilian a stern warning. Felipe powers through and starts throwing bombs, hurting Tafa with heavy punches high and to the body, and the body work is doing some serious damage while Tafa winces. Felipe considers a takedown, but he abandons it as he presses his full body weight on Tafa against the cage wall. Tafa’s left eye has started to swell quickly, and Felipe targets it with a right hand before following with a body kick. Tafa snaps his foe’s head back with an uppercut and a left hand, and both big men throw wildly. Fighting in a phone booth, the two trade with devastatingly effective combinations, and they barely take a step back as they sling it out to the end of the round.

Round 3

Tafa is so fired up that he comes into the round without his mouthpiece, but Dean is on top of that. The two heavyweights embrace as the crowd roars to life, and Felipe fires off a huge right hand. Tafa responds with one of his own, and comes back at him with a punch to the body. The Brazilian lands a power body kick, and Tafa reaches out and pops him in the chops. The two clinch up, and Felipe tries to get a knee off but shoves his man away instead. Tafa paws out a few jabs, and uses it to follow-up with a left hand. Felipe comes in with an elbow, and he starts ripping the body with shots. Tafa aims with similar punches, and the two are standing in front of one another with high guards as they attack the body. They keep landing heavy shots, and Tafa reaches out and pokes his opponent in the eye. The Australian immediately apologizes, and they touch gloves with they begin again. Felipe lands two punches, Tafa comes back at him, and the two trade like a turn-based battle. One lands, the other fires back, then the first attacks. This continues until Tafa abruptly changes levels, wrapping his arms around the Brazilian’s waist but not successfully grounding “Boi.” Tafa grinds Felipe on the fence as he lands body shots, and he gets warned for grabbing the cage a few times to keep Felipe there. Dean chides the two to keep working, so Felipe muscles his way out and lands a right hand. Tafa steps in with an elbow, and Felipe takes not and nails him with one. Tafa rushes forward and hits an unexpected trip takedown, putting Felipe on his back. The Australian does not land on top, and instead both men sit on their backside confused for a moment until they pop back up. Tafa takes advantage of the confusion by pressing Felipe heavily into the fencing, working the body with short shots as Dean again urges them to work. Tafa punches the body a few times and knees once, so Felipe pushes away and the two take deep breaths. In shades of Max Holloway vs. Ricardo Lamas, the two stand in front of each other and trade hellacious shots, both hurting one another but not slowing down. They keep this insane flurry going right until the final bell, and what a fight that turned out to be!

Yanan Wu (136) vs. Joselyne Edwards Laboriel (135)

Round 1

Returning to women’s bantamweight, “Mulan” Wu (11-3, 1-2 UFC) takes on a short-notice replacement opponent when former foe Bethe Correia went down due to illness. The fighter from China will be taking on newcomer Edwards (9-2, 0-0 UFC), and their matchup will gain oversight from referee Jason Herzog. We see a touch of gloves, and both women come out cautiously. Wu lands a few leg kicks from a distance, and Edwards aims to the body with a punch. Both women crash together and land strikes, but they separate as Edwards fires off a right hand. Wu hits a quick takedown, putting Edwards on her back in full guard. As soon as Edwards hits the canvas, she sets up an armbar as she puts her legs up high. Wu tries to elbow Edwards in the face, and she tries to stack up her opponent while also pulling her arm out. Edwards throws her legs around to get the armbar set, and Wu is in a bad way right now. Edwards tightens up the grip, so Wu keeps her opponent tightly presses as she rocks back and forth to break free. Wu sits up and thinks about slamming Edwards, but instead she gently sets her foe back down as she is still stuck in this position. Edwards wrenches with all her might to get the arm torqued, and Wu wriggles to separate herself, but Edwards holds tight. Wu calmly adjusts herself, and she sneaks her elbow free and leaps down to start pounding down on Edwards. The newcomer boots Wu in the face with an upkick, and Wu dives down and attacks a kimura while Edwards turns to her knees. Wu slides around to the back, and she gets one hook in but Edwards rolls through and winds up on top. “La Pantera” starts slamming elbows down, forcing Wu to twist around and give up her back. Edwards gladly takes this position, securing back control and landing punches. Wu spins around in the position to take top position with seconds to go, and she lands a few punches as the time expires.

Round 2

This round, there is no glove touch, as they keep a healthy distance to stat the round. Wu shakes her arms out and looks to block and parry strikes, so Edwards kicks her in the body instead. Wu backs away and tries to land a side kick to the head, but Edwards is out of range. Wu lands a few kicks, and Edwards walks through them, gets countered with a left hand and still manages to close the distance and land shots. Wu walks the newcomer down and starts spamming kicks high and low, and she wades forward throwing right hands and an elbow when they come together. Wu is loose now, as she bounces around with kicks and step-in elbows. Wu lands a right hand and a side kick to the chest, and Edwards has had enough of these exchanges and she tries to brawl. Wu grabs on to her opponent to hit a trip takedown, but Edwards rolls through it to wind up on top. Wu kicks her off, and Edwards starts pounding on her with punches. Wu climbs back to her feet as she takes punch after punch in the face, and she manages to get upright and turn Edwards into the cage before they separate. Edwards lands a short leg kick, and she uses a front kick to the body. Wu backs away and gets some kicks off, so Edwards bull-rushes her with punches and topples over with her aggression. As she gets back up, she fires off a double upkick much to the surprise of the crowd and her opponent. Edwards stalks Wu down as she tries to chain punches together, and she sticks Wu with a long left hand as Wu tries to engage. Edwards races in to engage, and she lands a series of punches that make Wu have to shake it off. The Chinese fighter throws back until the bell.

Round 3

Both women walk out of their corners confidently, and Edwards plants a side kick on the body as Wu comes at her with a right hand. Edwards throws a spin kick that turns into a spinning back kick as she continues her momentum, and the kick pushes Wu back. Wu gathers herself and comes in with a short fury, as the two both trade punches and land. Edwards races in and lands shots, and she has her lead leg kicked but still lands a few punches. When Edwards comes in on her, Wu is ready with a few punches of her own. Edwards lands a right hand, Wu returns with one, and Wu manages to get off a solid left hook. Edwards looks to come in and take the fight down, but Wu is ready for her and counters sharply. Wu throws a leg kick and takes one as well, and Edwards is ready to throw down as they engage in short bursts. Edwards slaps the body heavily with a kick, and Wu is forced to retreat for a moment. The Panamanian misses with a few leg kicks, and she spins with a back fist that Wu is able to block. Wu kicks her in the body, and snaps Edwards’ head back with a right hand as Edwards presses the action. Edwards is charging straight forward as she tries to brawl, and she lands a body kick when Wu meets her. The two land punches simultaneously, and Wu ends her combination with a few kicks. Edwards is quick to land a right hand, and Wu returns fire with a one-two. Edwards continues to race forward as she throws punches in bunches, hands up and chin down. Wu counters and tries to take advantage of this, but she is forced to defend when Edwards throws a turning back kick. Edwards again chains a body kick into a turning back kick, and she carries the pressure forward into a takedown attempt. “Mulan” springs back up, and both women land a few shots until the final horn blares.

Round 1

The bout was canceled Saturday morning when Hawes was unable to get medically cleared due to a leg injury. The news was first reported by RT Sport.

Punahele Soriano (186) vs. Dusko Todorovic (186)

Round 1

Kicking off the main card of UFC on ABC 1 is one of what should be five all-action scraps, when unbeaten middleweights Soriano (7-0, 1-0 UFC) and Todorovic (10-0, 1-0 UFC) lock horns. Keeping his head on a swivel will be referee Herb Dean, and there is a sporting glove touch that belies how violent this matchup could be. Todorovic opens up with a front kick that splits the guard, and Soriano gets off a heavy left hand to meet him in the middle. The two clinch up, and they separate where Todorovic can land a body kick. Todorovic sticks out a jab, and Soriano bears down on him but gets jabbed on the way in. When Todorovic lands a right hand, both men throw huge punches but neither land flush. Todorovic snipes at his man from a distance, and Soriano’s face is already marked up from these strikes. When the Serbian fighter goes for a body kick, he falls over, but Soriano does not take advantage of this. As Soriano misses with a kick, he reaches out and tags his opponent with a huge left hand that jostles loose the mouthpiece. Todorovic keeps his composure, circles away, and returns to picking at Soriano from afar. Todorovic lunges out a front kick, and he ducks down to clinch and avoid a big punch from Soriano. Todorovic dodges and weaves big punches that soar past his dome, and he evades every one while Soriano hits nothing but air. Todorovic clinches up to do some work, but he pushes off as Soriano charges at him and lands a left hand that opens a cut under Todorovic’s eye. Soriano lands at the end of a left hand, and the two come together and throw with everything they have. Todorovic ducks away and gets cracks with a left hand that sets him down. Todorovic gets back to his feet, but Soriano puts him back down with a thunderous shot. Todorovic falls to his back and still has his wits about him, throwing up an armbar and then transitioning into a leglock as Soriano squirms free and gets away. Soriano allows his man to stand up, bullies him against the fence and slams his fist into Todorovic’s jaw that knocks out his mouthpiece. With Todorovic on his back, Dean pauses the action to find the mouthpiece, and it falls through the grating of the cage exterior. Dean calls for the second mouthpiece, and it gets replaced and they continue fighting. Soriano does not let his man off the hook, walking Todorovic down and blasting him with power punches until Todorovic’s legs fall away beneath him as a left hand clatters off his jaw. After all the knockdowns and damage, Dean does not need to see any follow-up strikes, and he halts the match as Todorovic helplessly clings to his opponent’s legs. We have our first finish of the night, and the lethal fists of Soriano have successfully ejected Todorovic from the ranks of the unbeaten. What a performance!

The Official Result

Punahele Soriano def. Dusko Todorovic R1 4:48 via TKO (Punches)

Joaquin Buckley (185) vs. Alessio Di Chirico (186)

Round 1

Staying at middleweight but likely no less action-packed, 2020 breakout star Buckley (12-3, 1-2 UFC) tries to notch yet another highlight reel knockout all while attempting to become the first man to knock out the durable Di Chirico (12-5, 3-5 UFC). Keeping tabs on this nonsense-free contest is referee Keith Peterson, who shouldn’t blink as the fight could be over at any moment. Di Chirico offers a glove touch, but Buckley wants nothing to do with it as he would rather fight. Di Chirico leads off with a front kick, and Buckley catches the leg and cannot capitalize. Di Chirico does this again, and this time, Buckley gets off a few power punches. Buckley stalks his man down early, and the Italian slows him down for a moment with a stern inside leg kick. Di Chirico keeps push kicks out in front of him to back off an advancing Buckley, and he sneaks up a head kick that Buckley barely blocks. Buckley swings and misses with a punch, and he ducks down to jump forward with a looping hook. Di Chirico kicks the body, and meets Buckley’s chin with a sharp left hand. Buckley reaches to the body with a left hand, and he tries to do this again but Di Chirico is far enough away. As Buckley ducks down, Di Chirico blasts him with a perfectly placed head kick and completely shuts Buckley’s lights out. A few follow-up punches are purely academic as Buckley is already out cold, and Peterson dives in to rescue the sleeping Buckley. Buckley comes to, and he congratulates the winner while still on rubber legs. What a sensational win for Di Chirico, snapping a lengthy losing streak in spectacular fashion by lamping a heavily favored prospect.

The Official Result

Alessio Di Chirico def. Joaquin Buckley R1 2:12 via KO (Head Kick)

Santiago Ponzinibbio (171) vs. Jingliang Li (170)

Round 1

Returning from a lengthy layoff due to illness and injury, Ponzinibbio (27-3, 9-2 UFC) comes in as the biggest betting favorite on the card while trying to go for his eighth consecutive win against the granite-chinned Li (17-6, 9-4 UFC) at welterweight. The only thing keeping these two strikers apart is referee Jason Herzog, and he clocks them in as they touch gloves. Although he does not throw a strike in the first 30 seconds, Ponzinibbio manages to back Li away, before finally going after a leg kick. A tentative Li throws one back, and the two feint and fake at one another for a solid minute. Both fighters stick one another with left hands, and Li kicks the leg as he lands a left hook. Li rushes in with a trio of punches, and Ponzinibbio backs away to find a different angle. Li kicks at the leg a few more times, and Ponzinibbio checks one. Li keeps kicking the lead leg while Ponzinibbio tries to get his sea legs back under him, and the Argentinian pays Li back with his own leg kick. The crowd starts to voice its frustration for the lack of engagement thus far, so they trade leg kicks. Ponzinibbio sits down on a leg kick and nearly turns Li around, but the Chinese fighter bears back down on him with a reaching right hand. Li prepares counter left hands while the “Argentine Dagger” approaches him, and he digs to the body with a left hand. Li chops down the lead leg again, and works the inside as he comes forward. Li ducks down and fires a left hook, and Ponzinibbio brushes it aside and lands a stiff jab. Li has one leg kick checked, but he commits to another and then goes over the top with one that is shy of the mark. Ponzinibbio’s responding leg kick is far more impactful, but Li pays it no mind as he walks forward to engage. Ponzinibbio throws two long punches, and Li ducks them, winds up a left hand and reaches it out as far as he can. His fist slams square into Ponzinibbio’s jaw, sending the formerly conscious Argentinian crashing to the canvas. Ponzinibbio is out as soon as he hits the ground, but just to make sure, Li drops down one single powerful strike to make certain the fight is over. Herzog leaps in to halt the contest, and we have our second big upset in a row by chin-shattering knockout.

The Official Result

Jingliang Li def. Santiago Ponzinibbio R1 4:25 via KO (Punches)

Carlos Condit (171) vs. Matt Brown (171)

Round 1

A welterweight collision many years in the making is on tap for the co-main event, when two all-time great violence bringers in “The Natural Born Killer” Condit (31-13, 8-9 UFC) and “The Immortal” Brown (22-17, 15-11 UFC) finally close the cage behind them. Combined, the two finishers hold 48 stoppages across their 53 career victories. Referee Marc Goddard is the lucky man assigned to this contest, and with no touch of gloves, it’s on with the show! They start swinging early, as Brown walks forward and gets kicked in the head for his effort at the end of a combination. Condit throws a low kick, and Brown walks forward to land a right hand. Condit tries to counter with an elbow, but Brown backs off and lands a leg kick. Condit throws up a head kick, and Brown swings and misses back at him. Condit lands a stern leg kick, backs away and scores a second. Condit strings together a few head kick attempts, but he misses both and winds up with Brown latching on to him and securing a body lock takedown. Condit falls to his back but may have landed a short strike when Brown advanced, as Brown is bleeding on him. Brown, in his opponent’s full guard, sits up every so often to land strikes but is more intent on maintaining position and staying tight. Brown lands a solid elbow while Condit flails and tries to sweep the position. Brown hacks down with a few elbows as Condit is stuck against the fence, and he pulls off the cage but is still stuck on the bottom. The commentary booth mentions the cut for Brown may have formed when he scraped his face off the fencing, ripping his flesh open on the way down. Condit throws his legs up for a triangle attempt, and transitions into an armbar attempt while Brown sits up to get out of the position. Condit walks off the cage to pursue another armbar or get out of the precarious place, and Brown keeps him pressed on the canvas. Condit tries to sweep the position, but Brown holds on to him and ties him up. Brown lands a few punches from on top, but Condit stands up and puts Brown on his back. As Brown attempts his own armbar, Condit lands a few elbows and punches, and a last ditch leglock from Brown does not have enough time to develop.

Round 2

The second round opens with a pair of kicks low and high from Condit. He chains several punches into a combination that ends with a head kick, and Brown is barely able to block it. Brown walks forward and elbows Condit in the jaw, hurting “The Natural Born Killer” but not putting him down. Condit gathers his thoughts and resets, landing high and low strikes. Brown lands a kick but gets countered with a left hand and a body kick that makes him double over for a moment. Brown clinches up to take the fight down, but this time, Condit stays upright. Both men land kicks at the same time and Condit falls down, but he springs back up before Brown can leap on top of him. When Condit starts to unleash a few strikes, Brown goes for a takedown but is stuffed. Brown backs off, throws a punch and works his way back in to clinch. Condit tries to keep him at bay with a body kick, but “The Immortal” is on him and nearly hits a body lock takedown. Condit stays on his feet and sneaks up a knee along the way, so Brown thinks about keeping Condit on the fence but he cannot keep him there. Condit steps in with a low kick and sneakily transitions it into a low trip, throwing Brown down to the ground in impressive fashion. A surprised Brown falls to his back, and he ties up full guard to keep Condit from implementing his vicious ground-and-pound. He cannot keep Condit stuck tight the whole time, as Condit rips him with elbows to the forehead. Brown keeps Condit in his guard and eats a few shots, with Condit grinding his elbow off the Ohio native’s face and jaw. Condit looks to set up an armlock as he passes guard, and Brown pulls his wrist free and gets Condit back to his guard. Condit slashes like a horror movie villain with elbow after elbow, and Brown’s face is showing it but he does not appear concerned. Condit ends the round on top with a few short elbows.

Round 3

The two gladiators touch gloves to open the round, and Condit tries to land a leg kick right after but it clanks off Brown’s cup. Condit is disappointed with himself as he did not intend to go low, and Brown shrugs it off and takes just a few seconds before getting back to it. Condit chains a few punches into a head kick, and the two clinch up with Condit pushing Brown into the fence. “The Natural Born Killer” backs off and lands a few punches, and as he ducks down into a punch, Brown is ready for him and looks to change levels and take him down. Condit manages to stop it, but he slips and drops to a knee. Brown keeps pursuing a takedown, and a wild exchange leads to Condit sliding around and taking Brown’s back surprisingly. Brown twists him around and nearly puts Condit on his back, but the Jackson-Wink MMA fighter holds on tight to Brown’s ankle to put him on his back. With Brown stuck on his back halfway between the cage and the floor, Condit lands a few punches but is more keen on keeping this dominant position. As Condit pursues a choke, Brown slips out possibly thanks to the blood to push Condit into the fence. Brown pulls Condit down to the ground, and Condit cannot set up a triangle choke but he does land a few shots off his back when Brown enters his guard. Condit maintains a very high guard to flirt with a triangle choke, but Brown ignores it. “The Natural Born Killer” throws strikes off his back, until he bursts out of the position back to his feet. Brown drops down low to snatch Condit’s ankle, and Condit elbows him hard in the face to cause blood to flow again. Condit aims for a takedown, but Brown reverses the position and puts Condit on his back somehow. Condit spams elbows off his back and pursues submissions in defense, but Brown stays safe and keeps out of danger to ride out the round. What a fight! This delivered just as much as fans had hoped it would.

Max Holloway (146) vs. Calvin Kattar (146)

Round 1

The main event of the UFC’s first ABC card should be a stellar one, when former champion “Blessed” Holloway (21-6, 17-6 UFC) looks to get back to his winning ways against heavy-handed boxer “The Boston Finisher” Kattar (22-4, 6-2 UFC). These two featherweights need no more introduction, and referee Herb Dean will handle the particulars as they touch ‘em up to begin the final fight of the night. Holloway sticks out a few jabs, and doubles up on his left hand. Kattar nails Holloway’s lead leg with a kick, but it is one-and-done as Holloway walks forward with a few left hands. Kattar plants his left hand in Holloway’s face and lands a leg kick, and the two trade heavy jabs. The former champ lands low kicks, and he targets the body and head with impunity with long, powerful strikes. Holloway scores another leg kick, and he chains several punches together to the body and head. Kattar lands a leg kick, but Holloway is in his face with punches and a stomp kick to the knee. Kattar lands an effective jab that marks up Holloway’s face, but Holloway comes back at him with at trio of punches ending with a solid right hand. Kattar swings and misses with a big hook, allowing Holloway to tee off on him with five or six punches to the body and head. Both men land left hands at the same time, and Holloway kicks the lead leg twice to decent effect. Holloway rushes in with a stream of punches, and Kattar can only sit back and absorb them, but Kattar cracks Holloway twice with right hands. Holloway marches in with a few long punches that have how marked up Kattar’s face, and a one-two snaps Kattar’s head back. The ex-champ strides in with a knee up the middle, and follows the knee that lands with a few punches. Holloway absorbs a leg kick to land a few punches, and a right hand makes Kattar retreat. Holloway is unafraid to take shots to eat them, as he starts to load up on his punches while Kattar throws with reckless abandon. Holloway fakes high, low, and drills Kattar in the body with a spinning back kick. “Blessed” blesses Kattar with another, and he follows it with a few punches. Holloway gets off a third of these kicks, and a front kick from the former champ ends the round.

Round 2

The featherweights do not touch gloves, as they would rather start trading early. Holloway tattoos his fist on Kattar’s face a few times, and Kattar backs away and blocks. Holloway dances out of the way of a front kick to land a barrage of punches, and he is out of the way from a counter. Kattar lands one single punch to the body, and Holloway may have started showboating or he could be reacting to an eye poke. Holloway gets back down to it with punches to the body and head, never throwing single shots as he rips the liver with a left hand. Holloway comes back with a knee up the middle, and then two punches over the top catch Kattar standing still. Kattar slings heavy leather, and some land, but Holloway forces the issue and puts Kattar down with a right hand. Kattar treats it like a slip as he pops back up with no ill effect, and “The Boston Finisher” bites down on his mouthpiece to nail Holloway with a right hand that stuns Holloway momentarily. Kattar lands another, and Holloway wears it well but his pace wanes briefly after absorbing those heavy shots. The former champ spins with another back kick to the body, and he steps in and lands several quick punches in rapid succession. Kattar cracks Holloway with a right hand, and he lands a leg kick to disrupt a responding Holloway. Both men trade ferocious leather, and Holloway works the body fearlessly with knees and punches. Kattar aims for more home run punches, while Holloway is content to touch Kattar repeatedly. A few punches from Holloway have opened up a cut on Kattar’s right eye, which is also showing some swelling fast. Holloway kicks and punches repeatedly, before hurting Kattar with an elbow. The Boston native backs into the cage, and Holloway attacks him ferociously with punches in bunches. Holloway slices open Kattar’s head with another vicious elbow, and he works the body relentlessly while Kattar is reeling. Kattar tries to tie him up and take the fight down, but Holloway stops him and elbows him hard to make Kattar go on rubber legs. Holloway keeps the pace with strike after strike, and slips up a head kick that makes Kattar do the chicken dance. As Holloway looks to finish the fight, the time runs out and both men laugh and high five one another.

Holloway puts together a stream of punches as Kattar is hurt again, but the Bostonian grabs hold of Holloway to consider a takedown. Holloway stays in the clinch to get off a few knees, and Kattar elbows him hard. Kattar rips an uppercut that rings Holloway’s bell, and Holloway needs to take a moment to recover. Instead, he winds up on a few huge punches, and both men throw down without a care in the world. Kattar backs off to land a stomp kick to the knee, and a one-two forces Kattar to retreat again. The former champ targets the body with a punch, a body kick, and scores a huge shovel left hook that nearly lifts Kattar off the ground. Holloway brutalizes Kattar with a series of punches, bloodying up “The Boston Finisher” further. Kattar is not to be stopped, as he winds up with a huge right hand that smacks Holloway in the face. The former champ is not fazed as he continues his swarm of punches, forcing Kattar to attempt a takedown and fail. Both men back to the center of the cage, where they throw single strikes to catch their breath. When Holloway lands a leg kick, Kattar pops him with an uppercut. Holloway jumps off the cage like Anthony Pettis to land a punch, and he chains it into several more punches all while dodging the ones that come at him. Holloway sits down on a punch to the body, and Kattar reacts but still comes back at him. Holloway digs his left hand in the liver, and hurts Kattar with another body shot. Holloway lands a right hand to the head and a left to the body, making Kattar back away from the damage. Holloway lands a few punches, dodges three booming shots from Kattar, and points and guides his opponent for where he should be punching instead. Holloway targets the body again, drawing a reaction from Kattar, and he just barely avoids an overhand right that zooms past his chin. Holloway carves up the liver with a left hand, and he backs off Kattar with several punches to the body and head. Kattar is not out of this fight, but Holloway is styling on him as he is tripling up on his opponent. Kattar lands a serious right hand, but Holloway shrugs it off and blasts the liver once more with his heat-seeking left hand. Four punches from Holloway greet Kattar when the Boston native tries to land one. Holloway hurts Kattar with body shots, making Kattar’s hands drop to open him up for elbows up top. Kattar throws back wildly and lands a few, but Holloway wrecks him with strike after ferocious strike. Holloway keeps peppering the body with strikes, and Kattar is barely on his feet. Kattar tries to sling elbows and lands a huge right hand, but Holloway is on him and will not relent. Landing a few knees and some insane elbows along the way, Kattar is keeping it together, but just barely. Holloway tees off on him with an unbelievable amount of strikes, but Kattar survives and even stuffs a takedown. Holloway walks Kattar down and elbows him a few more times, and Kattar gives him one back. Holloway’s body shots are making Kattar react after almost each one, but Kattar slings huge bombs to give Holloway pause. Holloway dodges a spinning back elbow, delivers a spinning back kick to Kattar’s body, and starts working the legs again. Holloway’s head kick makes Kattar go on wobbly legs, and he smacks Kattar with a partial cartwheel kick to the head. A few more punches end the round, but miraculously, Kattar has made it to the bell. One more round to go.

Round 5

Kattar can continue in the fifth round, and Holloway nods at him in appreciation. Holloway lands a body shot and a few punches up top, leading Kattar to wind up with a huge right hand that Holloway easily sees coming. Kattar loads up with everything he has left, and Holloway ducks them and sticks him with several punches. Holloway’s jab turns into a body shot, and Holloway turns up the pace again to chase Kattar into the fence. The former champ sticks out a one-two and Kattar tries and fails to give it back to him. Holloway lands several right hands and Kattar is in a bad, bad way as his nose his smashed, face bloodied and he takes blow after blow. Holloway is able to dodge most of the strikes that come retaliatory, and he points at Kattar when Kattar tags him with a few. Holloway takes a deep breath, lands a trio of stomping leg kicks, and puts Kattar into the fence with a spinning back kick. Holloway kicks Kattar in the head and leg, and a few more punches from Holloway lead to possibly record-breaking totals as he chains them together. Kattar’s durability stays intact as he takes a kick to the body, and Holloway points to the commentary booth as he celebrates his successes. Holloway starts up his rhythm again with strikes at every target on Kattar’s body, as Holloway is feeling himself and battering Kattar. He yells for Kattar to go, points at the booth again, and unloads with a litany of punches. Kattar hits him back, and Holloway points at him and laughs. Holloway lands a few more punches, and Kattar is streaming blood but still throwing with all of his remaining energy reserves. Holloway styles on Kattar to end the round impressively, but perhaps even more impressively, Kattar has made it to the final bell. Knowing he has won in blowout fashion, he goes over to Kattar’s corner after the fight is over to shake hands with them and congratulate them for preparing their fighter well. What an incredible fight. Fighters will be hard-pressed to match that Herculean effort for the remainder of 2021. The UFC delivered spectacularly on its first foray into ABC, and this main card – not necessarily the prelims, mind you – will be remembered for quite some time.
