Just hours after news broke that lightweight Evan Dunham
was forced to withdraw from his UFC
132 matchup with George
Sotiropoulos due to an undisclosed injury, the UFC has
announced that Rafael dos
Anjos will replace Dunham against the Aussie at the July 2
event.
“Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Dos Anjos has won ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Submission of the Night’ awards, and Sotiropoulos has won ‘Fight of the Night’ twice, so I expect an amazing fight," UFC President Dana White stated in a posting on UFC.com.
Headlined by a bantamweight title confrontation between reigning
champion Dominick
Cruz and the only man to beat him, Urijah
Faber, UFC 132 goes down July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena
in Las Vegas. The card also features a middleweight clash between
sluggers Chris Leben
and Wanderlei
Silva, and a light heavyweight bout pitting Tito Ortiz
against Ryan
Bader.
A six-time UFC veteran, Dos Anjos (Pictured) recently had a three-fight winning streak snapped, as the Brazilian submitted to Clay Guida in August due to a jaw injury. Just 26 years old, Dos Anjos holds a 3-3 record inside the Octagon. The grappling specialist owns half of his career wins by submission and has only been finished twice in his six-years as a pro.
Owner of a 7-1 UFC mark, Sotiropoulos is also known for his potent jiu-jitsu game. The Australian recently had an eight-fight winning streak snapped on his home soil by German striker Dennis Siver at UFC 127. After competing on the sixth season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Sotiropoulos rattled off seven consecutive victories inside the Octagon, finishing five of his foes by knockout or submission. Currently residing in Vancouver, Wash., the 33-year-old represents the Fisticuffs Gym and holds eight of his 14 career wins by submission.
