Yair Rodriguez was the featured attraction at UFC Fight Night 159, and the fans in Mexico City did not react well when Saturday’s headliner ended in a no contest after just 15 seconds.

Rodriguez inadvertently poked Jeremy Stephens in the eye during an initial exchange, and “Lil Heathen” immediately recoiled in pain. After several minutes, Stephens’ eye still had not opened, and the bout was ruled a no contest. It was the second shortest no contest in UFC history.

Once the fight was officially waved off, fans began hurling popcorn, beer and other debris into the Octagon and in the direction of Stephens as he was escorted from the cage and out of Mexico City Arena. Rodriguez, meanwhile, was visibly upset.

“I apologize a great deal,” Rodriguez said afterwards. “We both trained very hard for this fight. I feel really bad about it. Jeremy will be back, let’s do this again.”

Initial reports revealed that Stephens was still unable to open his eye backstage, and the Alliance MMA product left the venue to receive further medical attention. Stephens’ availability for a rematch — or any other fight — will obviously depend on the status of his eye.
