A Well-Oiled ‘Machine’

If there were any remaining Steve Garcia doubters ahead of UFC Vegas 110, surely there are fewer now.

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 263 on Saturday at the Apex, “Mean Machine” lived up to his nickname, blowing through fellow rising contender David Onama in just 3 minutes, 34 seconds. It was close to a flawless performance, as the 33-year-old New Mexico native blasted Onama with punches while barely being touched. With his win streak now standing at seven straight, including six knockouts and zero close fights, Garcia is on the cusp of title contention at 145 pounds. He joins the featherweight bubble list at No. 14.

Unfortunately, that was the only clear takeaway from the Apex, as the rest of UFC Vegas 110 carried on the recent trend of prominent UFC bouts hinging on controversial officiating or judging. The heavyweight co-main event featured perhaps the strangest in-cage moment of the year for the UFC, as Waldo Cortes-Acosta appeared to have lost by technical knockout to Ante Delija, only for the bout to be restarted due to an eye poke. Cortes-Acosta then knocked out Delija seconds later. While the ruling by Mark Smith will be discussed—and possibly reviewed—in the days to come, for now Cortes-Acosta and Delija hold steady at No. 8 and No. 11 respectively.

On the UFC Vegas 110 undercard, Norma Dumont prevailed by split decision over Ketlen Vieira in a bout many observers thought she should have lost. While the result works out well for the division in the short term, as Dumont is the relatively fresher face and has fought fewer of the other bantamweight contenders, it may not leave fans clamoring to see her take on Kayla Harrison—or Amanda Nunes, should that rumored comeback become a reality.

In other action, Seika Izawa carried on her campaign of utter dominance, winning a clear unanimous decision over Saori Oshima at Rizin Landmark Vol. 12 on Sunday in Kobe, Japan. The 28-year-old is now a perfect 17-0, including nine defenses of her Rizin super atomweight title, and continues to certify herself as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
