Bellator 232 will see the promotion’s welterweight world grand prix come to a close. It was a tournament that garnered attention throughout, and its finale is one of the most anticipated bouts of 2019, especially since the last two competitors left standing are the current, and former champions of the division. It is a bout many observers of the sport will be watching, and personalities from within the industry have an opinion on.
When the Bellator welterweight world grand prix kicked off over a year ago, several fighters seemed poised to be crowned the tournament’s champion. However, as the brackets played out for the next 13 months, two men stood out above the rest. Current champion Rory MacDonald, and two-time champion Douglas Lima. The pair almost seemed destined to face each other in the finals. Not only because of their status as two of the very best in the division, but because of their closely contested bout in January of 2018 that saw MacDonald win the 170-pound title from Lima. It was an entertaining affair many hoped to see a rematch of, and now it will happen with the division’s title and $1 million on the line.
The rematch, on Oct. 26 inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, has been eagerly anticipated for more than a year.
