The Ultimate Fighting Championship continues its busy August full of events from Las Vegas with UFC Fight Night 174, and two fighters missed weight.
The 11-fight card is headlined by a bout between heavyweight
contenders Derrick
Lewis and Alexey
Oleynik. “The Black Beast” has become one of the UFC’s most
popular fighters due to his large personality and penchant for
devastating knockouts. However, Lewis (23-8, 1 NC) hasn’t scored a
knockout since his incredible third-round stoppage of Alexander
Volkov back in 2018. The heavyweight bounced back from losses
to Daniel
Cormier and Junior dos
Santos and is currently on a two-fight win streak after
capturing decisions over Ilir Latifi
and Blagoy
Ivanov. As always, Lewis had to cut weight to make the
heavyweight limit and came in at exactly 265 pounds.
Oleynik (59-13-1) will surely look to take advantage of Lewis’ ground game as “The Boa Constrictor” has picked up 46 wins via submission. The Russian is also on a two-fight win streak having outgrappled Fabricio Werdum in his most recent bout and tapped Maurice Greene with an armbar. The 43-year-old has been knocked out recently, though, as Walt Harris demolished him in just 12 seconds and Alistair Overeem needed just one round to defeat him. Oleynik looked prepared for the challenge on the scales and officially weighed a svelte 227 pounds.
All bouts are now official after the weigh-ins took place Friday morning, although two fighters missed weight: Beneil Dariush (158)* and Laureano Staropoli (174.5)**. Both Dariush and Staropoli were fined was fined 20 percent of their respective purses. Tim Means initially hit the scales at 172.5 pounds, but on his second attempt, he weighed in at 171 pounds.
UFC Fight Night 174 will air in its entirety on ESPN+. The 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT preliminary portion will be followed by the main card at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
